Maharashtra Plans Review of Autonomous College Fees
In a separate higher education development, Maharashtra’s higher and technical education department has decided to review fees charged by autonomous colleges following complaints from students about possible overcharging.
According to reports, students have raised concerns about differences between fees for conventional courses, such as BA, BSc and BCom, and those for self-financed courses. In some cases, reported fees range from around ₹4,000 for traditional courses to ₹60,000 for self-financed courses, even where the same infrastructure is used.
Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil has directed the director of higher education to examine the issue. The state currently has 151 autonomous colleges. Although these institutions have flexibility in setting their fees, University Grants Commission regulations require them to follow applicable state government or statutory council norms.
The proposed review is intended to examine whether fee structures comply with the relevant rules. It has also renewed discussion about transparency, affordability and the balance between institutional autonomy and student interests.
Together, these developments cover different concerns affecting candidates and the education community, from recruitment procedures and examination updates to the cost of higher education. Applicants should check official websites regularly for revised notices, results, and further instructions.
