Six-Month Bridge Course Launched for B.Ed. Primary School Teachers

Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi has launched a six-month Certificate (Bridge) Course in Primary Teacher Education (PTE) for eligible in-service primary school teachers holding a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree. The programme was launched in New Delhi on September 16th, 2026, and will be implemented through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). It has been designed under the framework of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). The course is intended to provide eligible teachers with specialised preparation for teaching students in Classes I to V. According to the Ministry of Education, the programme will focus on child-centred, inclusive and developmentally appropriate teaching practices. It is also aimed at helping teachers develop the skills required to understand the learning needs of young children and apply appropriate classroom methods.

What the Six-Month Course Includes

The programme combines theoretical learning with practical school experience. Teachers will study six theory courses and take part in online contact classes and school-based activities. The structure is intended to connect educational concepts with practical classroom experience.

Some of the major components include:

• Six theory courses covering areas of primary teacher education

• At least 10 days of online contact classes

• At least 20 days of school-based experience

• School-based practicum and practical activities

• Video tutorials and digital learning materials

• Online access to supplementary audio, video and interactive resources

The course will cover areas connected with child development, curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, language teaching, mathematics and the world around young learners. The official NIOS course structure also includes internal assessment, project work and school experience as part of the overall evaluation.

Teachers Covered Under the Programme

The bridge course has been developed for a specific group of in-service primary teachers. It applies to teachers who were appointed between June 28th, 2018, and August 11th, 2023, to teach at the primary level with a B.Ed. degree. The programme follows the directions that enabled NCTE to develop a bridge course for eligible teachers who did not have a Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) qualification. The course is not intended as a general route for people seeking fresh employment as primary teachers. NIOS states that the programme is meant for the professional development of eligible in-service teachers. It also notes that failure to complete the course within the prescribed timeframe can affect the validity of the appointment of concerned candidates.

Online Learning and School Experience

The programme will be delivered through an online distance learning mode, making it possible for in-service teachers to undertake the course while continuing their professional responsibilities. Teachers will receive digital self-learning materials along with access to additional online resources.

Admission to the programme is conducted online through the NIOS bridge course portal. Eligible teachers can register through the designated system, upload the required documents and check their admission status through the dashboard.

The medium of instruction will be Hindi and English. However, teachers will be permitted to write the public examination in any of the 22 scheduled languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. This provides candidates with flexibility when completing the assessment component of the programme.

Focus on Primary-Level Teaching Skills

The course places considerable emphasis on understanding primary school children and developing appropriate teaching approaches. Its objectives include helping teachers understand different perspectives on learning, plan pedagogy according to children's developmental levels and address diversity within classrooms.

The programme also includes learning around assessment practices and the use of emerging technologies in teaching and learning. The combination of theory, digital resources and school experience is intended to give participating teachers a broader understanding of primary education.
