The Ministry of Education has extended the application deadline for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) 2026-27 to October 31st, 2026. The extension gives eligible students additional time to submit their applications through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). The revised schedule also provides additional time for institutional and district-level verification of applications. The NMMSS is a central sector scholarship scheme designed to provide financial assistance to meritorious students from economically weaker sections and encourage them to continue their education beyond Class 8th. Under the scheme, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded every year to eligible students who qualify through the selection examination conducted by the respective State or Union Territory governments.

Revised NMMSS 2026-27 Schedule

According to the revised schedule, students now have until October 31st to complete their applications. The verification process will continue after the student application deadline.

  • Student application deadline: October 31st, 2026

  • Institute Nodal Officer (L1) verification: November 15th, 2026

  • District Nodal Officer (L2) verification: November 30th, 2026

  • Application platform: National Scholarship Portal

  • One-Time Registration: Mandatory before applying

The National Scholarship Portal has been accepting NMMSS applications since June 1st, 2026. Students are required to complete One-Time Registration (OTR) before submitting their scholarship application. Those who have already applied should also ensure that their applications are completed and verified within the revised timeline.

Who Can Apply for NMMSS?

The scheme is available to students studying in state government, government-aided and local body schools, subject to the prescribed eligibility conditions. Students applying for the selection test are required to have secured at least 55 per cent marks or an equivalent grade in Class 7th. There is a relaxation of five percentage points for students belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories. The annual parental income of an applicant should not exceed ₹3.50 lakh. Students who qualify for the scholarship receive financial assistance of ₹12,000 per year, with the amount transferred directly to beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The scholarship is intended to support students from Class 9th onwards and can continue through Classes 10th to 12th, subject to the applicable renewal conditions.

More Time for Applications and Verification

The latest extension is particularly relevant for students who have not yet completed their applications or those who still need to finish the registration process on the NSP. The Ministry has stated that the additional time will help eligible students complete their applications and facilitate timely verification by the concerned authorities.

As of September 30th, a total of 88,522 fresh applications and 1,97,133 renewal applications had been submitted through the portal. With the revised deadline now in place, eligible students can use the additional period to complete the required formalities instead of waiting until the final days.

EducationNewsNetwork highlights this update as an important scholarship deadline for students, schools, and officials involved in the application and verification process. Applicants should carefully check their details before submitting the form and keep track of the subsequent verification stages.

TopEducationNews also brings attention to the revised NMMSS timeline, particularly the separate deadlines for student applications and institutional verification. Students who are eligible for the scheme should complete the scholarship application within the stipulated period and ensure that the required One-Time Registration has been completed before submitting their forms.
