Karnataka Introduces AI as a Vocational Subject
The Karnataka School Education Department has introduced Artificial Intelligence as a vocational subject for students of Classes 9th and 10th under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). The programme will be offered in selected government schools from the 2026-27 academic year.
A total of 1,642 government high schools will be covered. These include 1,180 newly approved schools, 381 schools already offering NSQF subjects, and 81 existing single-sector schools.
The AI course is intended to develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, technical knowledge and employability. It will be offered in place of the third-language option under the existing NSQF framework. Participating schools have been directed to appoint AI guest teachers for the academic year.
The introduction of AI education also allows students to explore technology-related skills while continuing their regular school education. The programme is positioned within vocational learning rather than as a separate academic stream.
